New to the Department?
Welcome to the Department of Mathematics! Below is some information to get you started:
-
University ID and Computing

Arriving and leaving UVA: the ITS checklists
Technology Checklists for the UVA Communitycovers both joining and departing. One thing to be careful about on the way out: your UVA email and files can be switched off abruptly when your appointment ends, sometimes with no warning at all - the grace period depends on how the departure is recorded centrally, not on your job title, and deleted mail cannot be recovered. Export anything you need well before your last day. -
Software Gateway
https://its.virginia.edu/software/provides access to site-licensed software that can be distributed to members of the University at no charge. Our local IT person is Vincent Bayes, 434-924-6887, 116 Kerchof Hall -
Setting up Direct Deposit: In order to set up direct deposit for your paycheck, you will need to have an account on the University’s Integrated System
https://www.virginia.edu/integratedsystem/ -
Teaching: SIS (Student Information System) at UVa. Instructors use SIS
https://sis.virginia.edu/to generate class rosters and submit grades -
Canvas Course management system
https://canvas.its.virginia.edu/Instructors may create course sites with official class rosters. We encourage all instructors to load their syllabus and other coursework on Canvas rather than making copies -
Books: The Department will provide instructors with desk copies for their courses. See the front office (room
216). -
Graders: The Department can pay for a grader for courses in the 2000-5000 level with good enrollment (> 20), but finding the grader is up to the instructor. Student grader applications are kept on file in the front office (room
216); you may search that pool, select a grader, and contact the student to confirm. The grader should then visit the front office to complete paperwork. -
Course Enrollments: Students enroll in their courses through SIS. SIS maintains waiting lists for courses and automatically enrolls waitlisted students as space comes available. Situations may arise when students cannot enroll through SIS, and need a permission from the instructor which is handled by SIS.
- Scheduling Classrooms: There are two separate systems for booking classrooms:
- 25Live (UVA-wide classrooms): For booking University-managed classrooms across Grounds, use the 25Live classroom booking system. This includes most lecture halls and classrooms outside Kerchof Hall.
- Kerchof Hall rooms (Department-managed): For booking department-managed rooms in Kerchof (rooms 111, 128, 201, 314, and 326), contact the front office (room
216) or use the Kerchof meeting room booking system. These rooms are managed by the Math Department and are not part of the 25Live system.
-
Copying Exams: The Department has a copier/scanner (room
203) and floor printers (rooms313,118) for printing. You should be able to print from your office computer (hooked up to LAN or eduroam wifi) to any of these printers. The front office (room216) can send large print jobs to UVA Printing and Copying Services. Please allow two days for turn around. - Printers and Toner: The Department supplies and maintains the shared black and white printers in the common areas, and supplies the paper. The front office (room
216) can print in color on request. Faculty may keep a printer in their own office. Toner and other consumables for such a printer can be charged to the faculty member’s chair, startup, research, or grant funds, when those funds exist. When a faculty member has no such funds, the Department covers reasonable consumable costs on request.
