“Statistical Modeling: Two real-world examples”

On Thursday, April 9, 2026, the Applied Mathematics Colloquium presents Commonwealth Professor Karen Kafadar from the Department of Statistics at the University of Virginia. The talk is at 3:45 PM in Ridley Hall, Room G008, with a pre-talk coffee break from 3:00 to 3:30 PM in Kerchof Hall 314.

Abstract: Advances in statistics arise often, though not exclusively, through academic research. The problems that motivate these advances come from problems in other university departments as well as in industry, government, and public health. In this talk, I will briefly describe research that arose from projects at Hewlett Packard and National Cancer Institute, with a focus on the challenge of estimating real-time benefits of cancer screening programs in the presence of biases that are unique to screening trials. These examples demonstrate that research in the mathematical sciences can arise in many fields and that approaches to them depend on theoretical results across the mathematical spectrum to solve real-world problems.
