Colloquia, Seminars, and Other Events

September 8-12

COLLOQUIUM (SPECIAL DAY AND LOCATION):
Supertropical Algebra (joint work with Z. Izhakian)
Professor Louis Rowen (Bar Ilan University, Israel)

Time: Tuesday, 4:00pm     Place: Cabell Hall 311

Recent recent in "tropical geometry" has focused on the max-plus algebra, a semiring whose structure unfortunately is rather limited. Recently Z. Izhakian introduced a newer algebraic structure (which we call a supertropical algebra) containing the max-plus algebra, whose algebraic theory is much richer and enables us to prove analogs of many of the classical theorems from commutative algebra in this setting.

Refreshments served at 3:30 in Kerchof Hall Common Room (314)

COLLOQUIUM:
Recent Developments in Representation Theory of Symmetric Groups
Sasha Kleshchev (University of Oregon/UVa)

Time: Thursday, 4:00pm     Place: Kerchof Hall 317

We will review some recent developments in representation theory of symmetric groups. We will start with the (relatively) new approach by Okounkov and Vershik in characteristic 0, and explain its counterpart in characteristic p, which leads to deep connections with Kac-Moody algebras, crystal graphs, canonical bases, and ideas of categorification.

Refreshments served at 3:30 in Kerchof Hall Common Room (314)

MATH CLUB
Time: Friday, 4:00pm
(Pizza arrives at 3:45)

Place: Kerchof 317
Topic: Watching People Stand in Line: A simple way to find cool mathematical sequences
Speaker: Jameson Graber (UVa)
Suppose I tell you that you can have a dollar every time you get to the front of the line at a certain cash register in my store, and that you can go back through the line as many times as you want.  Sounds like a deal, right?  Well, now imagine that every time someone gets to the window, someone else hops into line at the end, so that the line keeps growing and growing.  And imagine that every time someone gets to the front of the line, the first two people in line or more get sent to the back of the line.  How often are you going to get your dollar?  In this talk I'll address problems related to this scenario as we explore some fun and exotic mathematical sequences that I studied as an undergraduate researcher at Washington and Lee University.

Seminars

DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS AND DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS
Time: Tuesday, 3:30pm
Place: Kerchof 317
Topic: On the Regularity of the Green Potential
Speaker: Tunde Jakab, UVa
We show that the solution operator for the Robin problem for  the Laplacian is smoothing of order 2 (measured at the level of  Lebesgue spaces) if the domain is bounded, convex, and if 1 < p ≤ 2,  where p stands for the integrability index. This extends earlier  results due to Adolfsson, Dahlberg, Fromm, Jerison, Verchota, and  Wolff, who have dealt with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions.
